After college, I returned to LA, where I shared a studio with artist Peter Sparrow in downtown LA, before that got groovy. Lived there for a year, then moved to Seattle in 1982, to join my uncle, Pierce Milholland, in artistic pursuits.
After moving to Brooklyn in 1985, I learned that my good friend Jeff Trakas had died while surfing in Palos Verdes. To memorialize his passing, I drew and
painted a series of images.
Shadow of Death, 1986, pastel on paper, 20" x 24"
Gallery display of Memorial Piece for Jeff Trakas, in 2006. Zask Gallery, Palos Verdes CA. This piece was the first time I became really interested in the framing, and its potential for added narrative.
More images made at the time (1986) that I made the large memorial piece
Detail of right side of the drawing, showing Jeff's face in a wave near the Dominator shipwreck, pastel, 1986,
First take on Cloyden Storm Drain image, 1983, oil on canvas board,
Prickly Pear Cactus, 1983, oil on canvas, 48" x 60"
